RECIPE FOR LINDBERGH’S FAVORITE COOKIE

CL

You can taste one of Charles’s favorite cookies on a tour of his childhood home — or make them at your house using his mother’s original recipe. As Charles wrote, “My mother often made a Swedish butter cookie — very rich, yellow, and in the form of an O. This was my favorite cookie.”

SWEDISH PARTY CAKES

  • 1 pound sweet creamery butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 3-4 cups flour
  • 2 small teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon lemon or almond extract

Let butter soften. Add sugar, stir; then egg, stir; then flour and baking powder (usually 4 good cups of flour); then extract. Force through pastry tube. Shape into small rings. Bake in moderate oven to deep lemon yellow. (May also be rolled into little balls, flattened and baked.)
